10 Nail Trends That Nail Art Experts Predict Will Be Huge In 2021

All the nail art inspiration you need before getting your next mani (whenever that may be).

14/01/2021

With every new year, comes a new set of beauty trends and hair trends, but none are quite as creative as nail art trends.

So, naturally we asked the experts for their predictions of what we'll be seeing on our #ManiMonday Instagram feeds for the rest of the year, especially now we're forced to recreate a pro level manicure at home.

Whether you're a one shade monochrome mani kind of person, or favour a more intricate negative space nail art design, these are the nail trends to keep in your Pinterest folder for the next time you have a nail appointment (can you imagine??) or attempt to DIY from the comfort of your sofa.

Read on for the biggest nail trends you need to try in 2021...

10 Nail Trends To Try In 2021

1. Negative Space

We don’t need to be taking any more negativity into 2021 but we will make an exception for this manicure trend.

‘Negative space is where the base colour is predominantly nude/clear with a design over the top, super chic and timeless in my opinion,’ explains celebrity nail artist, and the genius behind Dua Lipa’s enviable claws, Michelle Humphrey.

The best part? In case we end up going into Lockdown 100, this nail art will need less touch ups than you might think. ‘It's really great for potential chipping or regrowth as you tend to notice it less,' says Humphrey. 'Opt for an abstract design over your negative space, and a matte finish is a super chic option.'

2.Mellow Yellow

Give your mood an instant boost with a joyful hit of brightness.‘Muted, neutral colours never go out of style, however, this year, brighter bolder shades will take the lead. Two colours I predict will be favourites are sunny yellow and a vibrant 80s fuschia,’ predicts Rita Remark, celebrity manicurist and Essie global lead educator.

3.90s Revival

The return of the iconic French manicure was all the rage last year but the update for 2021? Chrome tips. If you don’t want to go full Goldfinger, just doing the edges is a chic way to make a bold statement.

‘Last year saw a huge revival of the classic French manicure - as seen on celebs, from Gigi Hadid and Dua Lipa, and it's here to stay,' says Humphrey. 'Up your game by wearing varied French tips - chrome finishes are super chic (I love a gold chrome French) and also changing up the colours on the free edge is fun and playful. This AW think of using a darker palette, i.e. reds, black etc.’

4. 3D Nail Art

We might still be living in our loungewear but it doesn’t mean our nails need to be as low-key as our outfit.

‘Nails this year are decadent to the point where function is forgettable— unless it's the fulfilment of complete fantasy. Especially when the salons reopen, designs will use the nail as a mere foundation upon which elevated 3D masterpieces are built,' forecasts Editorial Nail Artist, Miss Pop. 'It’s beyond studs and rhinestones, it’s completely out of the box. I’d say 2021 is go big, or go home! But uh, we’re already there...’

5. XS Nails

If you struggle to grow your nails to the elongated lengths we see flooding our Instagram feeds, rejoice! Shorter nails are making a comeback in 2021.

‘While longer oval nails will still be popular, I see a shift to shorter lengths. A shorter nail requires less maintenance and a rounder oval tip can create the illusion of length - win win!’, says Remark.

It doesn’t mean you can skip on the cuticle oil though, healthy nails are key. Blend a flush of colour with all the strengthening benefits with a polish that combines them both.

6. Hand Care

2020 may have been the first time some of us started religiously started picking up our hand creams but luxury manicurist, Harriet Westmoreland, predicts this will get even bigger in 2021.

'I think hand care in general will be huge in 2021! Hand scrubs and creams in particular,' believes Westmoreland.

Our hands will thank us later.

7.Shades Of Chocolate

Seeing as our best companion this year will probably be a box of chocolates, it’s fitting that we have a manicure to match.

Humphrey believes ‘browns and nude tones are a huge hit for this AW. Wear various shades of nude/brown in a cute gradient mani for clout.'

Whether you go for a gradient of your favourite shades of chocolate or a 70s swirl, this is a yummy trend we can all get on board with.

8.Falsies

We’re not sure how long we’ll have to be separated from our nail artists this year but to lessen the separation anxiety, there’s a new sophisticated fake nail revival in the works.

Press-on nails are no longer the misshapen plastic claws that only lasted an hour that we experienced throughout our teens. Luxury press-on nail brand, Naillery, are hand made and customised to fit your exact nail shape. We challenge you to be able to spot the difference.

The perfect solution until we’re able to meet our nail artists again.

9. Nail Layering

Just like blending your lipsticks to create the perfect customised red, this year will be all about layering your nail polish to achieve the ultimate flattering shade.

'Lockdown has given us time to experiment, I’m noticing people experimenting with different tones and layering polish to find the most complimentary nude for their hands,' says Westmoreland.

10.Matchy Matchy

Unfortunately some things haven’t changed as much as we might have hoped and masks are still a must-have in our lives, but you can at least have some fun with them.

‘2020 saw people matching their nail art to their face masks, perhaps this will continue for the beginning of this year too…’ says Humphrey.
